Our Curriculum with a Purpose
Our Curriculum
Improving education is our national mission and curriculum reform within the Morriston cluster remains an ambitious but achievable endeavour. Delivering Curriculum for Wales
requires all teachers and school practitioners to act as agents of change, engaging with the highly intellectual process that is curriculum design.
A particularly challenging aspect of building a flexible curriculum is ensuring coherence; without coherence, curriculum purpose and learner progression can be lost, leading in turn to inequal opportunities for some of our most disadvantaged learners. Developing curriculum coherence, therefore, has been and continues to be a shared responsibility between us and our colleagues in our partner primary schools. Curriculum coherence may be achieved by designing both vertical and horizontal curricula planning to ensure equity within the cluster.
Curriculum leaders within the Morriston cluster have worked closely with each other to ensure progression through the Curriculum’s progression steps, with the aim of minimising any gaps or repetition in learning but still allowing a personalised approach to learning by each setting having creative freedom to design the context of their learning. This continues to be monitored and developed as a cluster.
At Pentre’r Graig, all staff have worked closely in their ‘pods’ to ensure all skills from the cluster shared documents have been planned for, ensuring progression and coherence both at an individual level and at a cluster level. Teachers ensure progression is not only linear but broad, through intentional planning against a range of What Matters statements. These are woven into planning cycles to guarantee that pupils experience a rich and varied curriculum, with opportunities to deepen understanding and apply skills across contexts.
